NINE

Hal watched Steph get into her car, unable to stifle his wry smile. He had all the courage necessary when it came to his job, but when it came to one Stephanie Scott? That's when the word wimp came to mind.

But he'd found a way to get around his nerves; he'd found the perfect way to spend more time with her. Well, if he were totally honest about it, he'd have to admit she'd been the one to come up with the idea. But he was no fool. He knew a great opportunity when one walked up to him.

There was no denying she needed this sorry mess resolved. He'd had his doubts about her part in it at first, but as he'd proceeded with the investigation and gotten to know her better, his instincts had told him she wasn't the kind of person who would let herself be lured into the dangerous trap of drug crime. He knew Steph was innocent. And knowing how much was at stake for her, he also knew he couldn't stop until she was in the clear.

They both faced losing the careers they loved.

Steph flashed her headlights as she drove past him. He flashed back then pulled up to the curb behind her. As she turned the corner, he drove out, heading in the opposite direction, his mind on their dilemma.

A fair number of voters were beginning to listen to Ed's insinuations and outright accusations, even though no one was taking that campaign very seriously. Hal also knew the Ethan Rodgers write-in campaign was gaining strength. If he didn't put Steph's vandal/mugger/drug thief/rock thrower behind bars soon, he'd be attending Ethan's swearing-in ceremony and passing him the reins.

Only one problem: he had no clues. Truth be told, Hal wasn't sure he was dealing with only one person. Logic told him Steph was being targeted because of the drugs she kept behind the counter. Last time he checked, though, the justice system needed more than his gut feeling or an attack of logic to put someone away.

He glanced at the clock on his dash. Steph was probably pulling into her cute little place. It had surprised him to see such a no-nonsense person like the town's pretty pharmacist living in such a frilly, ultrafeminine nest. And since Steph was supposed to be safely inside that nest, he was going to swing by and make sure.

As he approached the carriage house, a light went on in her small living room. Through the curtains he could just make out her silhouette. She paused, leaned forward—probably turning on the small TV—then straightened and ran a hand through her short, choppy-cut blond hair.

A powerful urge to run his fingers through the soft, tousled strands rocked him.

But she was inside; he was outside. So instead, he went home.

Alone.

* * *

Steph turned on the news when she walked into her living room. Exhaustion hit her, and the frequent dull throb at the base of her spine cranked it up a notch. She ran a hand through her hair as she pressed her other fist into the sweet spot of pain.
